DTF Printing vs Screen Printing:
Which Is Right for Your Order?

You've got a design ready. Now you need to get it onto fabric. Two options keep coming up: Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing and screen printing. Both produce vivid, durable results — but they work very differently, and the right choice depends on your order specifics.

What Is DTF Printing?

Direct-to-Film prints your design onto a special film using a modified inkjet printer with CMYK inks plus white. A hot-melt adhesive powder is applied, cured, and then the transfer is heat-pressed onto your garment. The result is a full-color, soft-hand print that bonds directly to the fabric fibers.

What Is Screen Printing?

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen (one per color) directly onto fabric. It produces exceptionally vibrant, long-lasting prints — but requires setup costs (plates, screens, registration) that make small runs expensive.

• Minimum order — DTF: 1 piece. Screen printing: typically 24–50 pieces minimum
• Color count — DTF: unlimited, photographic. Screen printing: each color = one screen = more cost
• Setup cost — DTF: none. Screen printing: $20–$50 per color per design
• Fabric compatibility — DTF: virtually any fabric. Screen printing: best on cotton and cotton blends
• Durability — Both excellent when done correctly; 30+ wash tested for DTF at Vertex
• Hand feel — DTF: slightly raised, smooth. Screen printing: flatter, softer on cotton

For small runs, full-color designs, or orders with no color restrictions, DTF wins every time. For large runs of simple 1–2 color designs on cotton, screen printing can be more cost-effective.

When to Choose DTF

• You need fewer than 50 pieces
• Your design has gradients, photographic details, or many colors
• You're printing on polyester, nylon, or performance fabrics
• You want a fast turnaround (1–3 days at Vertex)

When to Choose Screen Printing

• You're ordering 100+ identical pieces
• Your design is 1–3 solid colors
• You're printing exclusively on 100% cotton
• You want maximum ink opacity and a completely flat feel
